چکیده

Most studies agree that the fate of femoral head osteonecrosis is associated with the size and location of the necrotic lesion. We present a volumetric method for assessment of osteonecrosis, based on magnetic resonance imaging. The method evaluates the percentage of the necrotic volume in the femoral head and in each of the head segments (octants). Along with the method, we present a classification system based on the geometrical features of the lesion. The system was used to classify 106 hips with osteonecrosis before treatment with vascularized fibular grafting. The hips were evaluated using the volumetric method. The follow up study indicates that the proposed method and the classification system can be reliable tools for the assessment of femoral head necrosis. Silent osteonecrosis of the femoral head following high-dose corticosteroid (CS) medications

Background: Osteonecrosis (ON) is known to be one of the most disabling complications following corticosteroid (CS) medications. However, evidence regarding risk of asymptomatic prevalence of ON among different diseases and the impact of variable steroid regimens are conflicting. We aimed to determine the prevalence of ON of femoral head in asymptomatic patients with systemic rheumatic diseas...

Not-Approved Weight Gain Supplements as a Cause of AVN: A Cautionary Report

Introduction: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a leading cause of end-stage joint disease in the young population that can conduct patients to total hip replacement in early life. There are various risk factors including, trauma, corticosteroids, thrombosis, hypertension, and alcohol. There is a growing number of femoral head AVN patients with a history of self-medication with he...

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis Is Not Caused by Arthroscopic Posterolateral Femoroplasty.

This study was conducted to identify the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head after arthroscopic femoroplasty extending to the posterolateral femoral neck, the source of the primary blood supply to the femoral head. Cam lesions of femoroacetabular impingement are typically anterior along the junction of the femoral head and neck. However, anatomic variations can involve the posterolat...

Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head: Are Any Genes Involved?

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a pathologic process that results from interruption of blood supply to the femur bone resulting in the death of bone cells and collapse of the femoral head. Nontraumatic ANFH continuesto be a significant challenge to orthopedic surgeons. While the exact mechanisms remain elusive, many new insights have emerged from research in the last decade tha...

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report

Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...
